What's New:
Phase I is currently proceeding through final design and is nearing completion. There has been an extension to the time needed to finalize the project and obtain the needed permits and right-of-way, and there is funding in place for the Phase I construction. Construction contracts will be let and construction will be scheduled once those permits and all necessary right-of-way is acquired. Please check back here periodically for any further updates.

Public Meeting held September 21, 2006 well attended by local residents
Over 150 community members attended the project’s open house plans display held September 21 at the West Broad Street Elementary School in Souderton. The meeting gave residents the opportunity to learn about PennDOT’s new right-sized alternative for the Connector and its associated roads.

The “Project”
The Sumneytown Pike/PA 309 Connector Project (S.R. 1058, Section HAT) is located in a 5-mile corridor running east to west through five townships in Montgomery and Bucks Counties, Pennsylvania (see Location Map in Engineering Update). The purpose of the project is to provide a connection from Sumneytown Pike just north of the PA Turnpike’s Lansdale Interchange to PA 309 to relieve existing and projected traffic congestion. Other aspects of the project include the Sumneytown Pike Realignment at the eastern end of the project and a Route 309 Direct Connect at the western end (described in more detail in Engineering Update).

The proposed project has been designed to accommodate two 11-foot lanes from Sumneytown Pike in Montgomery County to PA 309 in Bucks County with 8-foot wide paved shoulders. The project also includes widening existing roadways, providing adequate shoulder width, realigning tight curves and intersection doglegs, and providing turn lanes and traffic signals. Intersection improvements will be needed to accommodate the projected traffic volumes by adding left and right turn lanes and providing additional storage capacity. In effect, the entire corridor will be improved and capacity will be increased as a result.

This website will inform the community of the project’s progress, the preferred alternative for the project, final design progress, and any project news. The Sumneytown Pike/PA 309 Connector Project is jointly sponsored by PENNDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
