Sumneytown Pike/PA 309 Connector Project (S.R. 1058, Section HAT) Transitions Forward into Final Design

PENNDOT announced its receipt of final approval (October 2004) from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the Categorical Exclusion Evaluation (CEE) for the Sumneytown Pike/PA 309 Connector Project in Montgomery and Bucks counties. Please click here for PENNDOT's Press Release.

FHWA's approval of this preliminary engineering and environmental document has enabled PENNDOT to more forward with final engineering, right-of-way acquisition, utility clearance and construction of the five-mile long road that will run between Sumneytown Pike and PA 309.

Environmental and socioeconomic studies will continue to be on-going throughout final design including: Final Design Noise Studies; Phase III Archaeology Data Recovery; Wetland Mitigation and Stream Mitigation. PENNDOT will be coordinating directly with residential and business property owners that will require property acquisition.


We will continue to work with the Public during the Final Design phase of this project, and will be sending out a newsletter in the near future.

Project Schedule

Completion of the environmental permitting and right-of-way acquisition for Phase I is near completion. Advertising for construction contracts for Phase I (Wambold Road from Sumneytown Pike to Allentown Road & the Sumneytown Pike Realignment) is scheduled to begin in late 2008. Construction of Phase II (the Connector from Allentown Road to County Line Road & the 309 Interchange area) is currently planned for 2012.

Latest Project Activity

Final plans specifications and estimates for Phase I are being prepared for contractor bidding.

Final design of Phase II has restarted . Once a design is finalized for the Route 309 tie-in, more information will be available to the public.
